ZOONOSIS

Zoonosis is the infection or disease of the animal that is transmissible to humans under natural conditions or vice versa. The term derives from two Greek words: zoon ( " animal " ) and nósos ( " disease " ). In a more specific sense, the disease that is transmitted from the animal to the man is the anthropozoonosis , while that that is transmitted from the person to the animal is known as zooanthroponosis . It is common that, in both cases, they are diseases that affect various vertebrates, including man. Its treatment and prevention requires an interdisciplinary task involving doctors, veterinarians and zoologists . Specifically, we can determine that there are several perfectly defined groups of zoonoses: Viral, among which are Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever, rabies ... Fungal. Ringworm or histoplasmosis can serve as a clear example. Prionics. In his case, the most significant is the infection or disease known by the colloquial name of "mad cow diseas...

ZONE

The Latin word zone is where the concept that concerns us now comes from. However, it must be emphasized that this, in turn, has its etymological origin in the Greek and more exactly in the term ζώνη whose meaning was that of belt, girdle or girdle. According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) , 'zone' is a noun that is used to describe both an important extension of surface that has the shape of a strip or band as well as the portion of a land or surface that is It is delimited , the territorial extension whose limits depend on questions related to politics and administrations and a strip or list . From the perspective of geography , zones are each of the five portions into which the earth's surface is segmented as a result of the tropics and polar circles. However, in this geographical sense we also have to underline that there are other criteria when establishing various areas of this type. In this way, it is common to speak of the Euro Zone or Euroz...

ZOOM

Zoom is a word of English origin that allows identifying the special telephoto lens that has a focal length that can be adjusted according to the purpose of the user . This element, in other words, allows the image to be zoomed in or out according to its forward or reverse. The notion is not included in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) , which indicates zum as the appropriate term in our language. As it is said, the origin of the zoom dates back to the first half of the 19th century , when telescopes began to include moving lenses that allowed altering the focal length; back then, it was necessary to refocus every time that value was changed. The first zoom that allowed focus to be maintained even when the focus distance was changed was patented by Clile C . Allen in 1902 , while the first zoom lens that was produced on an industrial scale only hit the market in 1932 . The zoom lens concept refers to those tools that allow the photographer to manually vary th...

ZOOTECHNICS

The animal science is the discipline devoted to the study of breeding , the reproduction and development of animals . Its purpose is to achieve the maximum use of the animal resource by man, taking into account sustainability and without neglecting the welfare of the specimens. It can be said that zootechnics aims to allow humans to use animals for their benefit without there being an ethical dilemma in this regard, but always avoiding the animals suffering unnecessarily. Therefore, zootechnics raises how to better use animals for food or clothing purposes, for example, without the improvements achieved involving an increase in pain without meaning. This last point alone opens the doors to an endless debate between the meat industry and animal rights groups: is there really a level of pain that can be justified? Is it right, ethical or fair for us to use animals for our benefit? It is very curious that both some religions and science (two opposite sides, if there are any) ensure t...

ZOOPLANKTON

The zooplankton is the plankton made up mainly of animal species that may be present in freshwater or drink . Taking this definition into account, it is essential to know what plankton is to understand the notion. It is called plankton to the group of very small organisms that move passively through the water , that is, floating. These organisms remain suspended in the aquatic environment, usually at a depth of up to two hundred meters. Plankton can be divided into the aforementioned zooplankton (composed of those organisms that, as food, ingest organic matter that is already processed) and phytoplankton (also known as plant plankton, their organisms are autotrophic and carry out photosynthesis ). From this point two very important concepts arise when defining the different types of plankton: * Autotrophic organisms : are those whose nutrition is based on the ability to synthesize all the substances that are essential for metabolism starting from inorganic substances. In other wor...

ZOO

In order to fully enter into the definition of the term zoo, we are going to start by establishing its etymological origin. In this case, we have to underline that it derives from the Greek, more specifically from the sum of the following components: -The noun “zoo”, which can be translated as “animal”. -The word "logos", which means "study". -The suffix “-ikos”, which is equivalent to “relative to”. Zoo is an adjective that is used to name what is linked to zoology , which is the science that is dedicated to studying animals. The term, however, is often used as a noun to name the zoo (also known as a zoological garden ). In this sense, a zoo is a space where animals are raised and cared for to be exhibited to the public. These venues combine leisure with teaching , as they tend to entertain and, at the same time, educate visitors. Also, when they are in private hands, they seek an economic profit from their operation. There are over a thousand zoos around the worl...

ZOOMORPHIC

That which has the appearance of an animal is classified as zoomorphic . The term comes from zōómorphos , a word from the Greek language. Somewhat zoomorphic, therefore, it has a shape that refers to some species of fauna . The zoomorphic sculptures , for example, were common in different cultures of antiquity . Religious figures, amulets  and other objects with zoomorphic characteristics have been found in various regions of the world. In many museums, in fact, zoomorphic pieces of sculpture are preserved. The National Museum of Fine Arts of Argentina , to mention one case, houses several zoomorphic sculptures from the pre-Columbian era. Among them there are elements attributed to the so-called Ciénaga culture , which developed in northwestern Argentina in the first centuries of our era. Zoomorphic manifestations made of stone were also found in areas of the Iberian Peninsula . Experts recognized creations reminiscent of wild boars, pigs, and bulls, whose origins date back ...

ZOOGRAPHY

The Zoography is the branch of zoology devoted to describing animal species . Zoology, for its part, is the science specialized in the study of animals. With these ideas clear, we can understand that zoography is part of the science that focuses on the analysis of animals, mainly on the detailed description of the different species or isolated specimens. When describing an animal species , zoography seeks to provide as much information as possible about its characteristics . In this way, it not only informs about the physical peculiarities of the specimens, but also details data on their behaviors, their relationship with other species, their adaptation to the habitat, etc. An example of the application of zoography could be the following: “The dog is a mammalian animal with four legs. It belongs to the canine family and is characterized by the great development of the sense of smell and hearing. The usual thing is that the dog has a body covered with hair, although there are bree...

ZOOGEOGRAPHY

The zoogeografía is the scientific discipline which studies how different species of animals are distributed on the surface of the planet . It can be said that zoogeography is part of biogeography , the branch of biology focused on the analysis of the distribution of living things on Earth . Due to its characteristics, zoogeography can be linked to both zoology and geography . Experts in this specialty are dedicated to studying how the processes that led to a certain location of species in the world originated, as well as studying what factors modify this distribution. The story is also related to zoogeography. Due to its characteristics, this discipline cannot generate knowledge based on a general principle, but rather has to focus on the changes that occur along a trajectory. The evolution of species, orogenesis and climatic changes , in this sense, are some of the issues that affect zoogeography. Based on their studies, specialists can explain the migrations of animals and the reas...

ZONING

Zoning is the act and result of zoning : establishing zones  in a certain area. The concept alludes to dividing a territory into different sectors , made up of certain criteria. There are, therefore, multiple types of zoning. It is customary for urban or metropolitan planning of a city resort to zoning that creates residential areas , commercial areas , industrial areas , etc. Specific permits and authorizations for the development of activities and the use of the land apply in each zone, and specific rates and taxes are usually applied. Through zoning it is defined what type of constructions can be built in each area and what destination can be given to the properties . In a residential area, to mention one possibility, you cannot build a chemical factory. The zoning of ecosystems , on the other hand, is essential to correctly manage natural resources and preserve nature . This process favors the territorial ordering and allows the establishment of norms and a homogeneous managem...

ZOMBIE

Zombie is a term from the English language that, in our language, translates as zombie . It is a corpse that , through some kind of spell, has been revived . A zombie, therefore, is an undead . Although the concept can be used with multiple nuances, it is generally used in reference to the deceased who was resurrected by a magical element and who obeys the orders of the one who resurrected him. This meaning is common in voodoo : those who profess this religion believe that a bokor (a kind of priest who performs black magic) can perform a ritual to revive a dead individual and make him his slave . It can be said that a zombie is a creature without conscience or self-determination , that only follows orders or that acts on impulse. The most common representations show zombies as beings of zero intelligence , although of great physical strength. Zombies are often portrayed as cannibals : when they bite a (living) person, that person also becomes a zombie. As for the appearance of ...

ZOOLOGY

If we were to establish the etymological origin of the term zoology, we would have to determine that it comes from Greek and specifically from the sum of two words of that language. Thus, it is the result of the sum of zoon , which can be translated as "living animal", and logos , which is equivalent to "study of". Taking all this into account, we also have to underline that the term as such was coined in the 17th century. More exactly, it was the naturalist Johann Sperling who established it in one of his best-known works, which would not be published until after his death: "Zoologia Physica". The Zoology is the science devoted to the study of animals . Its experts, called zoologists , are in charge of the biological taxonomy of all species of animals (both existing and extinct). Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC) is considered the first zoologist in history to create taxonomy .   Charles Darwin (1809-1882) also made very important contributions to zoology wit...

ZIP

Zip is a concept that is used in computing  to name certain storage formats, whether physical or virtual. At the software  level , zip is used to understand data (text documents, images, programs, etc.) without loss of quality. The format (whose extension is . zip ) is used by various programs , both commercial and free. Its creator, the programmer Phil Katz (founder of PKWARE ), had to face a lawsuit for the violation of copyright in the development of the format. The zip uses various compression algorithms and supports an encryption system that is based on a unique key. Critics consider this encryption to be weak and vulnerable to different types of cyber attacks. Among the methods of understanding used by zip, they are the contraction ( shrinking ), the reduction ( reducing ) and implosion ( imploding ). Why do some users prefer RAR? Zip is often compared to rar, and there are various approaches, ranging from simple matters of taste to in-depth analysis to find the best co...

ZINC

The zinc or zinc is the chemical element with atomic number 30 , whose symbol is Zn . It is an abundant metal in the earth's crust, white and shiny in color, which can appear in the form of silicate, sulfur or carbonate. The use of zinc dates back to approximately 1,500 BC , according to objects found by archaeologists. However, it is believed that the chemical reactivity of this metal and its capabilities were not noticed in ancient times. Globally, the main zinc producers are China , Australia , Peru , the United States and Canada , in that order. These five countries contribute almost 70% of the metal used throughout the planet . Zinc is used to form alloys (such as brass ), galvanize steel and iron to protect them from corrosion, and make electric batteries, for example. It should be noted that zinc is an essential chemical element for humans, as it is used by various enzymes for the metabolism of proteins and nucleic acids. The human body has about 40 milligrams of zinc pe...

ZEN

Zen is a Buddhist school that emerged in India and developed in China under the name of chán. It is a very popular current in the Western world, although the concept includes a fairly wide range of practices and doctrines . Zen is based on the search for enlightenment  through techniques that avoid conceptual schemes. Originally, Buddhism  relied on a progression of the various states of meditation as the path to elevation. For Zen, there is direct and spontaneous access to the higher state that precedes nirvana , without the need to experience the previous states. The Zen school focuses on meditation to achieve spiritual awakening, differentiating itself from other schools that spend a lot of time studying texts. With its expansion to other parts of the world, Zen acquired various influences and added numerous techniques. One of the main changes occurred with its boom in Japan. In the West, more and more people have made a strong choice to practice Zen since they have...

ZAMBA

In Argentina, zamba is the name given to a genre of music and dance that are characteristic of the northwest region. The zamba is part of what is known as Argentine folklore . Derived from the zamacueca , a style native to Peru , the zamba can have a 6/8 , 3/4 or a combination of both. In the dance , the choreography combines three figures: the arrest , the half turn and the whole turn , which involve different movements of the members of the dance couple. Songs that follow this rhythm are known as zambas. " Alfonsina y el mar " , " Zamba de mi esperanza " and " Zamba de Vargas " are some of the best known zambas in the popular Argentine songbook. However, they are not the only known zambas that have become really important in Argentine and world culture. We are referring to others such as “Añoralgias”, by Les Luthiers; “Blanco y azul”, by Mercedes Sosa; "El Paraná en una zamba", by Jaime Dávalos or "Zamba de Juan Panadero...
