SON IN LAW

Son-in-law is the relationship that an individual has with the husband of his daughter. For example: Miguel and Daniela have a daughter named Victoria, who is married to Pedro. Therefore, Pedro is Miguel and Daniela's son-in-law . It can also be said that Miguel is Pedro's father-in-law , while Daniela is Pedro's mother-in-law .

It is a form of kinship that arises from a legally established relationship ( marriage ), with a straight line of descent. For a person to have a son-in-law, he must first have a daughter, and that daughter must have been married. This means that the bond with the son-in-law does not arise by consanguinity, but by what in the field of law is known as affinity.

Take the case of Diego Armando Maradona, the former Argentine soccer player. One of Maradona's daughters , called Gianinna, as in a relationship with the player Sergio “Kun” Agüero. While this sentimental bond existed, Agüero was Maradona's son-in-law . Therefore, reciprocally, Maradona was Agüero's father-in-law . When Gianinna and "Kun" separated, Agüero ceased to be Maradona's son-in-law .

The figure of the son-in-law is similar to that of the daughter- in- law. In this case, daughter-in-law is the wife of a person's child. If a man had a son and a daughter, and both descendants are married, the subject in question will have a son-in-law and a daughter-in-law.

It should be noted that, beyond marriage, the stable partner of the daughter is currently considered as a son-in-law, even if there was no marriage.

The same happens with other terms, such as the aforementioned daughter-in-law , and even with husband, wife and in-laws. In these cases, it is a light use of the language, knowing that it is not entirely correct, but with the intention of making a funny comment or even expressing the feeling of closeness and commitment to others.

In this era, in which romantic relationships tend to last less than those stories of eternal love that our grandparents tell us, and that the will to marry is not as common as they would like, the terms son-in-law and daughter-in- law are no longer heard as often as the equivalents to talk about the wedding couple, according to regionalisms.

We can talk about my boy, my boyfriend or my partner , among many other ways of referring to the male person with whom we maintain a bond of this type, but the popularity of commitment at a legal level has lost strength in many countries, in Partly because of the bad experiences that many young people have seen their parents, uncles and grandparents go through, but also because nowadays it is more normal for both parties to want to pursue their dreams on a professional level, and these are not always compatible with a union so durable.

On the other hand, both this word and its feminine give rise to an interesting analysis of the rigidity of the language, something that can also be appreciated in certain terms to designate jobs or professional titles that do not have a feminine or that have acquired it recently, despite the fact that a large number of women have occupied it for decades. In this particular case, what about same-sex marriages? Is it correct to say that "my son's husband is my son-in-law" ?

According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy, fortunately it is already possible to define this term as the male spouse of a person's child, for which we can ensure with all certainty that the use is correct for homosexual couples.
